The 2012 Toyota Highlander provides Portland Toyota shoppers a choice of four or six-cylinder gasoline engines and a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. The 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid combines a gas V-6 with an electric motor at each axle to provide standard AWD. The Highlander Hybrid has a self-charging system that can propel it along with electric power alone, with the engine, or with a combination of the two, as determined by special sensors on the vehicle.

Standard on all 2012 Highlanders is traction and antiskid technology for enhanced grip on take-offs and in turns, and anti-lock brakes for added control in emergency stops. With the optional towing package, trailer ratings for the 2012 Highlander remain at 5,000 pounds with the gas V-6 and 3,500 for the Hybrid and four-cylinder.
