Received recall letter concerning floor mats awhile ago but no follow up from toyota. I also read where my 2009 was on a recall for accelator pedal problem, why wasn't I informed of that ?

I ordered a Toyoto Highlander back in November, 2009. It arrived at the dealership about 2 weeks ago. Since that time, I have simply asked (due to the gas pedal problem Toyoto has been having,and considering the time frame of my order and delivery), for a written statement that my vehicle doesnot have the gas pedal problem or that it has been fixed. It has been very difficult acquiring the written statement. I would like to take possession of the vehicle as soon as possible, but can't seem to get the reassurance need. The dealer sent me form indicating that my VIN "No information found" but that is too vague. What can I do?

I thought I'd read that Toyota sent out some incentive money to dealerships to help off set the cost to repair recalls, and to show their customers that they care about them, like a fuel fill up or to wash/vacuum their car.
Good business sense at least. Are their other's who have heard this?

Toyota Customer Service has simply stopped answering the phone. Similarly if you bring your car to a dealer and now note an electrical problem of any sort they simply will not keep a record of it that can be referenced. Has anyone else seen this issue?..... and finally they will send you to a customer service representative who simply is unavailable or will not talk to you. Toyota....shame on you...they should close you down starting with you local dealers.

We have a 2008 Lexus ES350 and have had no issues whatsoever. Nonetheless, I have had the recall work done to the car. We now have just over 20K miles on it. My question is this:

1. Is there a certain mileage point between which the rapid acceleration has been noted to happen ?

2. Has Toyota or Lexus initiated any type of buy back plan for their vehicles ?

I know Toyota has been having difficulty pinpointing the problem. I had a similar issue 30 years ago with a chevy impala. It turned out to be an issue with the cruise control engaging by itself. just thought I'd mention it to see if toyota looked at that as a possible cause.

I find it amazing that Toyota has spent time and money to send new information regarding the use of 0/20 motor oil in the 2010 Prius but to date I have yet to receive any information from Toyota regarding the recall on my car and what steps I should take.

This is great information for the media outlets since engine oil is now more important to Toyota than recall information.

@Darlene
You would have to ask National if they have taken all their inventory through the recall process.

Have the appropriate models been recalled in Costa Rica? I return there this Sunday, and National gives me a 2010 Toyota 4-dr. Rav 4. Please let me know asap as I leave for Costa Rica in 4 1/2 days. Thanking you in advance, Darlene

Who is the manufacturer of the pedals and the electronic systems that control the acceleration and braking? Everyone keeps looking soley at Toyota which is very narrow-minded in scope. The source the problem is who/how/what is manufactured then installed through the assembly process. Granted, Toyota has to get the cars off the road - folks' safety is priority [both Toyota/Lexus drivers and those they come into contact with on the road]. But, we're learning this is in more lines than Toyota - come on folks, get to the main cause of the problem and NOW!

I have recently been in an accident with a recalled Toyota. While we were sitting at an intersection the Toyota ran the stop sign hitting a jeep bouncing off the jeep and then plowing into my 2002 Ford Explorer pushing us several yards before stopping while the Toyota tires were still spinning and smoking even after we had stop moving. The police report did indicate that the accelerator had stuck thereby causing the accident. The driver of the Toyota's insurance company has denied any liability for the damages to any of the vehicles involved. I guess my question is what if any resolutions do I have with the Toyota recall and how do I go about get it started?

The driver of the Toyota’s insurance company has denied any liability for the damages to any of the vehicles involved. I guess my question is what if any resolutions do I have with the Toyota recall and how do I go about get it started?

Would like to know the status of the Fortuner. Are there any issues with the new Fortuner?

Lot of forums are discussing regarding a back suspension problem of the Fortuner - are there likely to be recalls?

I'm an expat in Taiwan and about 7 months ago I ran in to an acceleration problem driving an 2006 IS250. The IS250 is owned by the president of the company I work for and she is shorter than I am and therefore has a different driving position than I do and sits closer to the wheel.

Anyway I pulled the car out of the factory gave it some gas going up the side of mountain and the pedal jammed and the car wouldn't slow. Luckily nobody else was on the road and I was able to shut the car down and put it on the side of the road. Thinking it was something I did (I personally don't own a luxury car) I restarted the car, now in park the pedal was still jammed so the engine started racing. I shut the car down again I looked down at the pedal and sure enough the floor mat had jammed under the accelerator pedal. Here is the thing--The owner because of typhoon season had the dealership put in rubber/foam mats over the existing mats and because I drive in a different position I experienced this problem and she never had this problem. The reason I am submitting this is that the factory mats on the Taiwanese version of the 2006 IS250 are snapped to the floor so they can't slide. Was this a quick fix to the problem they new about back in 2006 or earlier and did they do this for all the Lexus models worldwide? Note to Toyota owners- Don't put a mat over a mat in a Toyota and make sure if you have swapped out factory mats that the new mats are a proper fit for everyone in your family.

I have a Toyota Camry 2009 that does not start with J. I have not received any information in the mail about a recall of my car. What should I do? Do I go to the dealer anyway? Do you have any dealers in the area of Miami, Florida that are addressing this problem? I feel very apprehensive about driving my car and will not drive it in expressways. I require advise and information on this very serious matter. Thank you.

How do I know brake override has been installed after recall?
I sent my 2010 Camry LE back to dealer to have A0A and 90L recall. After that, I see the pedal has been cut short about one inch but I can't find any item of brake override in Dealer's invoice page. Under 90L SSC, I find two records, 1. 04009-52106 F6 Tibia Pad and 2. 78118-41010 A2 STOPPER ACCELERATOR. Which one is brake override?

FYI: I want to offer you my experience of uncontrolled exceleration about 5 years ago on a 2003 Honda Accord, repaired by Schaumberg Honda (i.e. Also called "Bob Rhorman Honda") located in Schaumberg, IL. I was able to produce the uncontrolled excelleration (with the Service Rep in the car) by "hitting" the gas pedal for "down shifting" to the "passing gear". Upon analysis, the Service Rep indicated that the fault was in an "electrical component".
NOTE: If you want, you may use the above information for your current problem investigations. No Reply to me is necessary.

Tired about hearing about Toyota recalls. I would like to know why the meadia is making such a big deal about Toyota recalls. I have owned Toyotas for years and they have been almost trouble free. I have had two Toyota's recalled over the years, one was a T100 truck recalled after seven years to change a gasket. The other was on my tundra witch I got in 2000 and now in 2010 they want to check for some rust that might cause some damage. That is what I call good service. Over the past few years the north american car manufactures have had all kinds of recalles witch you might hear on the news or you might not. And if you do hear it on the news you don't hear it day after day. Now I ask why the big deal with Toyota recalls? Sounds like propaganda to me. Doug

I bought a Siena van and found the hinge of driver side doors was broken inside the door. When I drove to the dealer, they told me they would repair it free of charge because this defect was existing before delivery. I lived in Japan over 10 years and now in Canada. I will not buy any Toyota cars in future. My friends, relatives, alumni, all one if consulting me before buying a car, will not buy Toyota cars forever. This is just because I loved Toyota and it betrayed me. Toyota should have let us know this problem when we go to the dealer for normal maitenance. If Toyota want to cheated us, actually Toyota is ruining itself.

@Mike

Regarding your Solara, it does not appear on the official press release which you can read here http://www.toyotarecall.org/official-press-release/press-release-february-1-2010/

If you are still concerned, you can call Toyota directly.

@R Tepper
Toyota says that they will be mailing out letters to all cars included in the recall but there is no guarantee that you will get the letter if your address is not correct in their database. I would call the Toyota hotline to confirm that your VIN#'s are in their database with the correct mailing address.

When will my 2008 Camry and my 2009 Corolla be called in and fixed. Are the fixes going to fix the real problem???? How long do I have to drive these cars before they will fixed and why must I risk my family's lives while I wait?

Why doesn't Toyota tell consumers some defensive measures/maneuvers in stopping a vehicle when the accelerator sticks. Such as applying the emergency brake in unison with turning the engine/key off then turning the key back to the on position to muscle the steering and bringing the car to a halt, or down shifting to second and low even with automatics.

I understand the emergency brake will fail burn out eventually. I understand the risk of turning the ignition off to turn off the engine and locking the steering column, plus any steering/control you might have left after shutting the engine off and putting the key back into to the on position to unlock the steering column.

Now in down shifting the transmission would it blow the engine or transmission thus at least disabling acceleration. A better chance/odds of surviving rather than receiving the fate of the off duty police officer and his family(RIP).

I once had a truck I took into my regular mechanic, an 1986 with a carburetor. A buddy of mine was following me with it when he flashed his lights for me to stop. He said the gas pedal was sticking. Without looking under the hood because it was only 3 miles back to the shop I started driving it back. Sure enough the pedal stuck and after several attempts at slamming the gas pedal it wouldn't release. Luckily I was on a straight road, no hills, hardly any traffic but no shoulder to pull off. I turned the key off shut down the engine an quickly turned the key back on and was able to muscle the truck into a 90 degree turn on to a side road between 30 and 35 MPH. Popped the hood to find out the mechanic hadn't tie rapped a line out of the way and it got hung up on the accelerator arm. Needless to say I never used that mechanic again.

One might think Toyota wouldn't want to offer any of the above suggestions due to further legalities, but what's better a chance of survival and injury or death. The accelerator could stick, also, taking it in to the dealer. One death is one to many.

Now I'm not suggesting the above is a solution to anyone caught up with an accelerator problem, such as Toyota's, since I'm by no means an expert. Just wondering if there's any experts out there to help?

Hello

I'm seeking some advice/information. I have a Toyota Avensis T2 5dr 2.0 UK 58.

The problem I'm having may or may not be to do with the accelerator, but you can imagine with all the news I'm starting to wonder...

I'm not experiencing any of the jumps, or surges that people are reporting, but when I take my foot off the accelerator, the car does slow down, but then as it does, it's as if the engine itself carries on driving the car forward. As if the engine is creating it's own momentum, even though, I'm not pressing the gas pedal. So I'll approach a roundabout, take my foot off the pedal, the car will slow down to a certain point and then the engine itself sort of creates the power to take the car round the roundabout; if I don't de-clutch the car would carry on going without my having to press the gas. Is this the pedeal problem, or is it something else? Apolgies for the non-technical explanation - I don't really understand cars.

Thanks

Did you check that the Toyota database had your correct mailing address in their system so that the letter could be mailed?

I have a 2007 Camry and spoke with the service manager of Toyota of Richardson and was told that I would receive a letter about the recall. My car did a "run-away" the first year I had it. I have not heard from the service manager or Toyota. When will this problem be fixed? It seems there is a lack of concern or follow-up
on what I was told. How long should I be waiting to get my car fixed?

@Ruby
If your vehicle is not in the recall list, contact the NHTSA and register the accident to be investigated. The recall list may grow as this problem gets wider scrutiny.

I purchased an 09' Corolla after having extensive back surgery and could no longer get easily in and out of my Scion TC. I purchased the Corolla because the Toyota line was supposed to be sooo safe. In researching the recall I noticed that this pedal assembly has been in use for at least 5 yrs on some models. I ask how it could take such a safety minded company so long to admit there was a problem??? I traded-in the Corolla yesterday. Value on the Corolla is dropping daily and it's only a year old, unbelievable.. I'm 100% disabled and really couldn't afford to but I asked myself is it worth the risk? Could I live with myself if I ran over and killed an innocent? The trade in value on my Corolla was only half of what I had left remaining owed, but with rebates and a discount for trading out of the Toyota, I barely escaped a negative equity situation. I personally don't feel a shim on the accelerator mounting bracket will fix the issue. I would like to see the research that was done to rule out the ECM computer.........

I PURCHASED A 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA FROM AL HENDRICKSON TOYOTA IN COCO NUT CREEK FLORIDA . NOT SOON AFTER I NOTICED MY GAS PEDAL AS BEING VERY SENSITIVE TO A POINT WHERE I WOULD NOT LET ANYONE DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK FOR AN INSPECTION AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG AND THAT MY VEHICLE WAS "MADE FOR RACING".. OF COURSE THIS IS NOT WHY I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE.. AS TIME WHEN ON I BECAME MORE AND MORE CONCERNED IT BECAME VERY AGGRAVATING.. TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO AL HENDRICKSON AND EXPLAINED I WAS NOT COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE VEHICLE NO LONGER.. THEY EXPLAINED AFTER LOOKING AT HTE VEHICLE AGAIN TO BE PATIENT. THAT "THERE WILL BE SOMETHING COMING OUT ABOUT THIS" I WAITED UNTIL MY NEXT OIL CHANGE AND TOOK MY VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALRSHIP[ DELRAY TOYOTA]AND OF COURSE I EXPLIANED MY PROBLEM BUT THEY ALSO FOUND NOTHING WRONG .. NOW I FEEL ONE BIG HUGE COVERUP... I DONT EVEN WANT TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE HELP ME OUT

@Ervin
I would take your car to a local Toyota repair center to have the car checked. I would also contact the Toyota Customer Care Center to report your specific problem.

I own a 2003 Matrix. My gas petal got stuck as I was aproaching a major highway in 2004. I was able to get it unstuck by alternating hitting the brakes and tapping the gas. I didn't realize that it was the gas petal that got stuck by itself and assumed either the mat interfered or a rock or something got stuck. Now it is obvious that it was poor quality on your part. Why is it not on the recall list? Just how much danger am I in that it will happen again and maybe cause someone to be injured or killed? Please respond to this as soon as you can. I am afraid to drive it or worse, allow my wife to drive it after I saw what was happening.

I have had two instances of sudden excelleration while parked in my 2005 Toyota Tacoma. I notified the Dealer in each case and they implied that I caused the problem. Why isn't my truck listed for recall? I plan to take my truck to the local dealer and ask him to identify the maker of the gas pedal mechanism. If I have a CTS gas pedal, I will requst the Dealer to replace it. If he refuses, I will sell the car and never buy another Toyota.

is this wider spread than they are letting on. I have a yaris sr 58 plate my accelorator as stuck a few times. Once when i was coming up to a roundabout and attempted to go down my gears i totally took my foot off the accelorator and nothing happened. I only managed to slow when i put my foot slowly on the brake. this happened a while ago but i still have a vivid picture of it in my mind. It has happened a few times since but nowhere near as severe. My partneer convinced me that i must have had something stuck under my accelorator when i told him what had happened even though there was nothing on the floor.

@Ted
Self inspection is not recommended. If your car year and model are involved in the recall, you should be having the car checked by an authorized Toyota service center.

I just looked at my 2008 Avalon Ltd. accelerator pedal and there isn't anything on the pedal where the circle indicates there should be "Toyota CTS." It's blank. So, what does that mean?

My 2007 Toyota Tacoma was included in the recall in November 2009.
Why is the Tacoma NOT included in the suspended vehicle list relased this month?

I have a leased 2008 Camry and plan on getting another car tomorrow. I'm not willing to get ANY another car from Toyota. My and my family's lives are not worth it. In the interest of public safety, none of these cars should even be on the road.

The question is whether Toyota is going to do the right thing and allow people out of their contract or is it still going to stonewall everyone and claim that they're going to work it out. Sorry, it's much too late for that.

@All
We have contacted a number of Toyota dealers and the consensus is that all were surprised when the email came yesterday that sales and production would be stopped on 8 models. Today, Toyota dealers are truly scrambling to come up with a local PR and damage control plan.

@Joann
You are alone in your concerns about owning a car that may not be safe. Toyota in their public statements have said that they are taking this seriously. Toyota will need to check all cars involved in the recall to ensure that they are safe. If they do that, you most likely would not be able to walk away from a lease because recalls happen all the time. This one is just particularly frightening and there is a concern about how long it will take to fix 4 million cars.

I would call the Toyota Customer Satisfaction numbers about the Japan built cars since the press releases and documents that we have read do do make this distinction. You can contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331

We just leased a 2010 Rav 4. I found out from the service department at our dealership, that the recall for the acceleration problem is not involving cars built in Japan. If the vin number begins with JT it was built in Japan. According to this info, our car was built in Japan.

Is this true? Or do I still need to worry about our Rav?

I have 1 year left on a 3 year lease on a Camry that is on both recall lists.
Any way to get out of the lease?
I do not want to lease a car that is not safe.
Has the company expressed any comments on customers wanting out of their leases or have potential law suits of problems arising?

@Cindy
I work for a Toyota dealer in the Midwest and while I can not speak for the dealership where Pat purchased his Corolla from I can tell you that here we found out about the stoppage at the same time the rest of the U.S. did. What I am getting at here is there is a good possibility that the GM at Pat's dealership did not know that the stoppage had taken place.

Again while I can not speak for Pat's dealer I would assume if Pat is truly worried about his vehicle then he should contact his dealer and they will gladly work with him to give him piece of mind.

On a side note both my fiancee and I drive Toyota's effected by the recall and we are not concerned. To be on the safe side we removed the floor mats from both vehicles and I have instructed my fiancee to shift her vehicle into neutral if something were to happen. These strategies have given us peace of mind but I highly recommend that you and anyone else effected by this recall do your research and contact your dealer to determine which strategies would work best for you.

I purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla and I am uncomfortable driving it until it can be fixed. Can I receive a loaner from my dealer until the problem is corrected. If not, will they allow an exchange for a model without problems.

Does anyone know what the problem is with the pedal assembly that causes the apparent wear? What is it that wears? Did the supplier that makes the parts for Toyota do something wrong? Or is it a design mistake> Did the supplier or Toyota design the part that wears?

@Paul
The cars included in the recall that was announced in November are just having their recall letters sent out now, in stages. We have been told that Camry owners were the first on the list of letters to be mailed so you will have to wait. When your letter arrives, please come back and post. If anyone has received their recall letters, speak up on what model it was.

@Cindy
Some states have a 24-48 hour contract cancellation process for situations where important information was not disclosed. Please check with the General Manager at the store or the Division of Motor Vehicles in your state. If needed, contact a local lawyer to make sure your decision to void the contract is recorded in the time allotted. We can't offer legal advice since we are not lawyers so do your research. If you want to share your state, maybe a lawyer in the forum can respond.

On the evening of Jan.26 my daughters boyfriend was in the process of signing papers on a 2010 Corolla. My husband and I saw on the evening news that Toyota had suspended all sales on this model. We called Pat (My daughters boyfriend) and told him. The general manager said that he had not heard that. That it was the floor mats that were the problem. This was a out and out lie...can this car be retuned today. Also, how can Bob Richards get away with this?

@Carol
I would check your contract if you have a window to return the car or check with your lawyer. Some states may have laws on the books to protect you like the Lemon Law.

I just purchased my Toyota Corolla less than a week ago. The recall and halt of the manufacturing of this vehicle makes driving my brand new car not comfortable. Can I return the vehicle and receive a full refund of my down payment?

I understand that there was a recall of Camry LE breaks. This applied to the 2001 model and is not related to the most recent breaks recall by Toyota regarding runaway excelleration. I am having trouble locating this recall in the Toyota website. Can you locate this recall and email it to me.

Thank you,

I have a Toyota Corolla 2009 which was built in Turkey. Is the recall also for cars that are not built in the US?
If so, do we take it to a certified Toyota Dealership in our country?

I have a 2010 LED Corolla.If I take my car in for inspection of acelleration system tomorrow and its functioning ok how does that help me if this aceeleration problem is someting that occurs when petal is worn down or in the future.It could test fine tom.but what about next month,next year.How does inspection now clear a problem that may not even be there yet as my car is new,and petal not likely to be worn out?

Comment:
In an article published in USA Today 1/22/10, Edmunsen
Engineering (Expert?) advised to turn the ignition
off on a runaway car. This is logical, however, a caution
followed, "But don't turn the key too far as it will lock
the steering wheel." This is quite puzzling,as the you cannot
lock the switch unless the car is in park.
(I have not been able to contact Edmunsen company.)

I have a 2004 Camry XLE, My accelerator pedal stuck when parking in my garage. The car surged and went up the garage step, into the sheetrock of the house to the tune of $4500 damage. I have not seen this year on the recall list. Have their been other complaints with the 2004 XLE camry?

I have a 2003 Sequoia, my abs, vsc and trac off lights have all come on. So I took it to get serviced and they told me it was a sensor and it would cost $600 to replace it. I only have 73,000 miles on this suv, has this been a problem with this vehicle and is there anything that can be done?

@Jennifer
Some dealers are offering loaner cars when you bring in the car to be fixed, you have to check with your local dealer. The process to fix the issues outlined in the recall do not take a long time, so they key for your peace of mind, if you get your car scheduled to be fixed.

My car is a 2010 Camry, and I just got it about 3 weeks ago. I know it's on the recall list. I'm scared to drive it now, especially that I have two children under the age of 5. I wanted to know if the dealership where I bought my car can give me a temporary car (that is not on the recall list), while they fix my camry. Can that be done?

Here is my two cents worth regarding the floor mat / gas pedal issue. I have a 2009 Tacoma and purchased the Toyota all weather mats from an on line dealer, not with the vehicle. I do no have the carpeted floor mats that sit on top of the installed carpet. My all weather mats did not come with the retainer clips but I obtained those from the dealer from whom I bought the truck. I found that a bit of vigorous stomping on the new mats firmly planted the fingers in the lower carpet. Installing the clips further anchored the mats which should fit back against the contour of the floor in front of the driver seat. The flap at the rear of the all weather mat should be sliced off at the rear of the mat. This flap must bend up against the contour of the floor below the front seat and being stiff, it does not flex well and could have a tendency contribute to mat creep. I have not experienced problems with my truck although I will admit, that even though I have not driven it night and day, having the good fortune to rely on my feet for local transportation, I have made several 15 hour trips with it. Ted Michel

@Kelly
I would take your car to your local Toyota dealer if you have questions about your check engine light and if that model had any open recalls for that year. The current floor mat/accelerator recall is not a check engine light issue.

My check engine light came on took my car down to the Advance Auto to do a diagnostics which showed the pressure controlled solenoid electrical fault was the possible problem. What does that mean? And was this a recall problem for a 2005 Corolla LE.

@Sal
This recall does not cover your vehicle and only pertains to Toyota factory installed mats. I would suggest that next time you bring your car into service, you ask a trained technician about the positioning of your after market mats to ensure that you are not at risk.

What if my floor mats are after market, does this recall effect
me even though my Toyota is an older model year, 1998 Rav4 2 door hard top. I know many folks with this problem. And most have already replaced the mats since they purchased.
